5 Minute Action for January 21, 2017: BE VISIBLE!

If you’re planning to march, fantastic! Be loud, take lots of photos and videos and post them along with your thoughts about the day.

If you can’t march, there is still so much you can do to BE VISIBLE!

Step 1: Take out some paper and a magic marker and create a bunch of signs. You can even use post-its.

Step 2: Paste them all over – car, house, office, forehead, back…be creative!

Here are a few great sign ideas:

  • We Are Created Equal
  • Love Trumps Hate
  • Resistance is Built on Hope
  • Resist
  • I’m With The Marchers!
  • …and, placed in a sketch of a certain body part: ‘Not up for grabs’

Step 3: Join 1@1 for a moment of silence at 1pm EST.

The idea was “created to unite all women on the day of the Women’s Marches in Washington and Nationwide, who cannot attend for various reasons -— care givers, cashiers, cops and others who must work, women who aren’t at liberty for fear of reprisal, the incarcerated, the ill — to allow us to stand together and take action as one,” event organizers wrote.

— from Mission Statement, Women’s March on Washington

“The rhetoric of the past election cycle has insulted, demonized, and threatened many of us – immigrants of all statuses, Muslims and those of diverse religious faiths, people who identify as LGBTQIA, Native people, Black and Brown people, people with disabilities, survivors of sexual assault – and our communities are hurting and scared. We are confronted with the question of how to move forward in the face of national and international concern and fear.

In the spirit of democracy and honoring the champions of human rights, dignity, and justice who have come before us, we join in diversity to show our presence in numbers too great to ignore. The Women’s March on Washington will send a bold message to our new government on their first day in office, and to the world that women’s rights are human rights. We stand together, recognizing that defending the most marginalized among us is defending all of us.”

Action for January 20, 2017:  GET READY!

Step 1: In anticipation of the Women’s March on Saturday and the work of the next four years: Read the First Amendment to our Constitution.

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

Know your rights, and use them!

Step 2: Make sure you know who is your representative in the House of Representatives, and record their phone number – you will need this often in the future. This is an easy-to-use tool: http://www.house.gov/htbin/findrep.

Once you find your representative, click on their name and you will go their website; contact info, including phone number, is typically at the bottom of the page.
