5 Minute Action for Thursday, 4/6: Let Female House GOP’s Know You’re Disgusted

With so many issues on the table – Russia, healthcare, the Supreme Court nomination, the budget, Syria, N. Korea, etc. – where should Trump be focusing his time?

We say:  NOT defending Bill O’Reilly, the Fox News host. Fox has paid five women about $13 million to settle allegations against the 67-year-old host. Yesterday, Trump defended O’Reilly calling the conservative host a “good person” and that he didn’t do anything wrong.

This is on top of the following story: With little notice, President Donald Trump recently signed an executive order that advocates say rolls back hard-fought victories for women in the workplace. On March 27, Trump revoked the 2014 Fair Pay and Safe Workplaces order then-President Barack Obama put in place to ensure that companies with federal contracts comply with 14 labor and civil rights laws. The Fair Pay order was put in place after a 2010 Government Accountability Office investigation showed that companies with rampant violations were being awarded millions in federal contracts.

TODAY’s 5 Minute Action:

Step 1:  Take a minute and check out this photo and storyline about Trump rolling back these workplace protections for women. Note the 2 women prominently clapping –  Liz Cheney (R – Wyoming) and Virgina Foxx (R – North Carolina). Click here – http://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/trump-pulls-back-obama-era-protections-women-workers-n741041

Step 2:  Call and/or Fax Cheney and/or Foxx and let them know they have failed hardworking women across the country.

  • Cheney:  202-225-2311; Fax – https://faxzero.com/fax_congress/C001109
  • Foxx:  202-225-2071; Fax – https://faxzero.com/fax_congress/F000450
  • Script:  “I am (name), a woman who has fought my entire life for dignity, respect and fair treatment in my workplace. I was disgusted when I saw a photo of you smiling and clapping as you stood next to Trump when he revoked the Fair Pay and Safe Workplaces order. Trump has denegrated women and yesterday called Bill O’Reilly a good man who has done nothing wrong. Please wake up, stand up, and do the right thing for the sake of women across our country.”

5 Minute Action for Wednesday, 4/5: McConnell Has Run Kentucky Into The Ground – Don’t Let Him Do The Same To Our Democracy

Mitch McConnell (R-Kentucky) was elected to his first Senate seat in 1984.

So how has that been for Kentucky? And, should we have any reason to feel good about his ‘leadership’ of the Senate – using the ‘nuclear option’ (a change in the Senate rules to confirm Supreme Court nominees with a simple majority vote) to change Senate governance in a way that will make our democracy significantly more partisan?

A quick scan of the state of Kentucky’s rankings brought up the following:

  • The state is 44th in overall health rankings (2015)
    • One of the few measures that improved over the prior year was health insurance coverage…soon that will change with Mitch in charge!
  • The state was 45th in 2016 and 50th (yes, that is LAST) in 2010 in a ranking of best run states.

And, as of last September, ’16, he was also the LEAST popular of ALL GOP Senators as rated by their constituents!

Are you kidding, this is a person driving our Senate’s actions and decisions?
TODAY’s 5 Minute Action:
Step 1: Tell McConnell you have no confidence in his leadership and that he is wrong to invoke the ‘nuclear option’!
  • Send a free fax by clicking here (and remember to respond to the fax confirmation) – https://faxzero.com/fax_senate/M000355
  • Call his Washington office:  (202) 224-2541
  • Script:  “I am (name) from (state), and in your role as Senate majority leader, you should answer to all Americans. I am deeply troubled by your plan to invoke the ‘nuclear option’ and change the Senate rules for Supreme Court justices. You are damaging our democracy. I and the majority of Americans and Kentuckians DO NOT stand with you on this.”

Step 2:  If you have time, post this information on Facebook.

5 Minute Action for Tuesday, 4/4: Nunes Must Recuse From House Intelligence Committee

As the plot of Trump/Russia collusion continues to deepen, we agree that Rep. Nunes cannot remain the chair of the House Intelligence Committee.

In what many now believe was a ploy to distract from other bad news for Trump, Nunes was given intelligence by a pair of White House officials that showed that Trump and his associates were ‘incidentally’ swept up in foreign surveillance by American spy agencies – basically a commonplace situation and a non-issue. He then rushed to the White House to share the news – which they had given him! All this made for a ridiculous circus that distracted from the real story…which was the real purpose of his ‘performance’.

TODAY’s 5 Minute Action:

Step 1:  We all need to tell our House representatives to remove Rep. Nunes as Chairman of the Committee.  Also, we should contact Rep. Paul Ryan with the same request.  If Nunes does not recuse himself, the only person who can remove him is Paul Ryan.

  • Find your House member’s phone info and Paul Ryan’s contact info here:  http://www.house.gov/htbin/findrep
  • Use a free fax service and send a message to your House member by clicking here – House. You will receive an email to confirm this is a valid fax – be sure to confirm!
  • Script:  “I am (name) from (zip) and I am disgusted by the actions of Devon Nunes.  He is without doubt a puppet meant to distract from the real news of Russian interference in our democracy.  I urge you to force him to recuse himself from the Intelligence Committee NOW!”

Step 2:  If you have time, also let Nunes know directly how you feel.

  • Scroll to a relevant post on Nunes’ facebook page and add a comment; click here –  https://www.facebook.com/Congressman-Devin-Nunes-376470350795/
  • Comment:  “Shame on your for showing such partisanship in your diversion tactic with the White House. At least now it is unquestionable that we need an independent investigation, as you can’t be trusted in your role as Committee Chair.”

5 Minute Action for Monday, 4/3: Get on Undecided Dems to Oppose Gorsuch

Gorsuch will be coming up for a confirmation vote this week. Now is the time to make one more push so our legistlators, whether GOP or Dem, hear our message.

First, we’re shocked at some of the Dems who have not yet declared how they will vote on Gorsuch. Whether they’re just waiting to show their hands or really are undecided, we need to let them know that we expect them to oppose such a partisan pick.

With respect to the GOP, the idea of them changing the rules (the ‘nuclear’ option), to allow a simple majority vote for Supreme Court Justice, would mean a sad day for our democracy.

TODAY’s 5 Minute Action:

Step 1: Please call or fax your legislator (again) to let them know where you stand, particularly those Dem’s who are undecided:

Sen. Michael Bennet (Colo.)

Sen. Chris Coons (Del.)

Sen. Dianne Feinstein (Calif.)

Sen. Angus King (I-Maine)

Sen. Bob Menendez (N.J.)

Sen. Mark Warner (Va.)

Sen. Ben Cardin (Md.)

Sen. Patrick Leahy (Vt.)

DEM’s VOTING FOR (3):  Sens. Joe Manchin (West Virginia), Heidi Heitkamp (North Dakota), Joe Donnelly (Indiana)

ALL GOP are voting for him, so use this to let them know NOT to use the nuclear option!

  • To send a fax using this free fax service, click here – https://faxzero.com/fax_senate.php
    • Remember to respond to the confirmation email
  • Call your senator, if you don’t know their phone number, use this link to find it; click here – https://www.senate.gov/senators/contact/
  • Tailor the script to whether they are GOP, a Dem supporting Gorsuch, an undecided Dem, or one already confirmed to fight his confirmation.  The essense should include:  “I am (name) from (zip). I am opposed to Gorsuch’s confirmation based on his historical interpretation of the constitution in favor of big corporations over individual rights, as well as opposition of women’s choice and LGBT rights. I urge you to vote NO. Further, I am sickened by the GOP threat of a ‘nuclear’ option, which would be a further step by this administration to destroy our democracy.”

5 Minute Action for Sunday, 4/2: “This Morning” from Mary Oliver

Sunday actions on TrumpResistance.TODAY are focused on religious freedom and/or spiritual enrichment.

With so many horrible things happening all around us – from civilian casualties in Syria to the assault on the environment and everything in between, it is difficult sometimes to see the wonder in the world around us.

We offer this beautiful Mary Oliver poem in the hope of rekindling your sense of wonder about this miraculous world.

TODAY’s 5 Minute Action:

Step 1:  Please enjoy this Mary Oliver poem named “This Morning” – from her Felicity collection:

This Morning

This morning the redbirds’ eggs

have hatched and already the chicks

are chirping for food. They don’t

know where it’s coming from, they

just keep shouting, “More! More!”

As to anything else, they haven’t

had a single thought. Their eyes

haven’t yet opened, they know nothing

about the sky that’s waiting. Or

the thousands, the millions of trees.

They don’t even know they have wings.

And just like that, like a simple

neighborhood event, a miracle

is taking place.

Step 2:  Make a mental commitment to pay more attention to the miracles happening around you – today and every day.

5 Minute Action for Saturday, 4/1: Climate Change is Bad for Business (April Fools’!)

What do these brands have in common?  Nestle, General Mills, Gap, Mars, Staples, Unilever, Levi Straus, and eBay.

Two years ago these companies, and many others, signed a petition to state governors urging them to implement the Clean Power Plan. The petition stated: “Our support is firmly grounded in economic reality. Increasingly, businesses rely on renewable energy and energy efficiency solutions to cut costs and improve corporate performance. The increased frequency and intensity of storms, warmer temperatures, extreme precipitation, and changes in weather patterns put trillions of dollars of institutional investors’ assets at risk and require companies to be innovative at adapting to these changes.”

Signatories to that statement doubled down their support for the plan on Tuesday.

More companies have joined in. Staples, which made $18.2 billion in sales in 2016, said, “We will continue to support the EPA’s clean power plan and the reduction of carbon emissions associated with electrical power generation which has been linked to climate change, as we have for many years and believe it’s smart business.”

Anna Walker, senior director of global policy and advocacy at denim maker Levi Strauss & Co., told BuzzFeed it “remains committed to reducing greenhouse gas emissions in our operations and supply chain, and we will continue to be advocates for meeting the US climate obligations in the Paris Climate Agreement.”

TODAY’s 5 Minute Action:

Step 1: Share and buy – these are companies that deserve our thanks and support!

5 Minute Action for Friday, 3/31: Gorsuch is Bannon’s Choice – Got to Be a Big “NO”!

He’s being called “a wolf in sheep’s clothing”…just what we need in a Supreme Court judge.

Make no mistake, based on his past record and the fact he is Bannon’s pick, he will support overturning Roe v. Wade; maintain Citizen’s United and give greater power to corporations and take away from individuals; and vote against anything giving LGBT people federal rights, including marriage should it return to the Supreme Court. And this is just for starters.

TODAY’s 5 Minute Action:

Step 1: Join The People’s Defense to learn more and tell your legislators to vote NO on Gorsuch.

  • Click here to go to their website action page and follow the simple instructions to call or send a postcard  – http://peoplesdefense.org/actions/
    • If you already have your senators phone numbers, no need to go through their system; go ahead and call using the script below.
    • (Don’t hit ‘return’ while filling out the postcard until you are done – that sends it)
  • Script for call or postcard:  “I am (name) from (zip code). I urge you to vote NO on Gorsuch. Filibuster if you must. He had a clear record of supporting the demise of federal protections for individuals, esp women, LGBT and other more vulnerable people. And, I don’t believe he will be an independent check on the Trump administration. Vote NO!”

5 Minute Action for Thursday, 3/30: LGBT Elders Need Your Help

The Trump administration has deleted questions on sexual orientation and gender identity (SOGI) from the national surveys of the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). Voluntary data collection on LGBT elders is essential for identifying unmet needs and ensuring federal allocation of resources.
Advocates fought hard to make visible the lives, concerns and needs of LGBT elders. The health and well-being of the most vulnerable LGBT elders hangs in the balance. Do no let LGBT elders be erased and forgotten.
We only have to May 12, 2017 to submit requests to HHS to restore LGBT questions to the department’s national survey.
TODAY’s 5 Minute Action:
Step 1:  Please submit your comment to HHS about the importance of retaining SOGI survey questions!
  • Submit written or electronic comments to Heather Menne:
    • Email: heather.menne@acl.hhs.gov
    • Snail mail:  Heather Menne, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services:  Administration for Community Living, Washington, DC  20201
  • Script:  “Please restore SOGI questions to the National Survey of Older Americans Act Participants and the Annual Program Performance Report for the Centers for Independent Living. Do not let LGBT elders be erased and forgotten!”

5 Minute Action for Wednesday, 3/29: Support Coal Miners

Trump seems to be the only one who ties rolling back coal environmental regulations to creating jobs.

Robert Murray, the founder and CEO of Murray Energy, told the Guardian that during a February visit to the White House to meet President Trump, “I suggested that he temper his expectations. Those are my exact words. He can’t bring them (jobs) back.”

And, the headline in the Roanoke Times on Monday:  Trump Breaks a Promise to Coal Country.

The article sites examples of the folks who believed Trump’s promises for a better life and will likely end up far worse. As West Virginia senator, Joe Manchin, once said, coal miners are like Vietnam vets. They gave everything to help the country, and now are looked down upon and given little help. Upon these heros and heroines, Trump descended with platitudes and promises which will be impossible to keep. Regardless of how we think they should have voted, let’s help make sure our legislators know that we don’t want them or their children to suffer at Trump’s hand.

Step 1:  Read the article – click here:  http://www.roanoke.com/opinion/editorials/editorial-trump-breaks-a-promise-to-coal-country/article_5c035e43-3fe1-58cf-818f-86fca83c1228.html

Step 2:  Contact your favorite legislator and urge them to support economic development funding in coal country so miners and their families can have good job opportunities.

  • See link at top right for Senate and House contact info.
  • Script: “I am (name) from (zip). I read about Trump’s promise to bring back coal jobs by easing regulation, and it’s just not true. We need continued investment in economic development in coal country, so agencies like the Appalachian Regional Commission can continue to re-invent the region and bring prosperity back to those who deserve opportunity. I urge you to support these types of investments.”

Thank you to Rogans List for tipping us to the article and story.

5 Minute Action for Tuesday, 3/28: Head Exploding; But Stay Focused

We’re a little long winded today.

We have to stay focused despite yesterday being another head-exploding day. Among the crazy was:

  • Climate change comes off the agenda (quote from White House official:  “To the extent that the economy is strong and growing and you have prosperity, that is the best way to protect the environment.” HUH?);
  • $1B in White House budget ‘supplement’ to be spent on just 62 miles of The Wall.
  • Jared Kushner is promoted. Per Huff Post:  “So, if you’re keeping track, Jared Kushner, who comes to Washington with no government experience, no policy experience, no diplomatic experience, and business experience limited to his family’s real estate development firm, a brief stint as a newspaper publisher, and briefly bidding to acquire the Los Angeles Dodgers, will be working on trade, Middle East policy in general, an Israel-Palestine peace deal more specifically, reforming the Veterans Administration, and solving the opioid crisis.”)

Every day there will be similarly troubling actions, as we’ve cataloged over the past two months. We can expect more of the same…every day. The question is, what is the longer game? We come back to the post from Saturday, 3/25, slightly revised.

Trump’s taxes will help understand his conflicts of interest, financial motives and cronyism. Trump is now combining infrastructure spending with tax reform in an effort to get both sides on board – don’t let your representative fall for this without making a deal for his tax returns…and transparency.

TODAY’s 5 Minute Action:

Step 1:  Get used to saying and writing:  “Art of the Deal:  No Trump Tax Returns, No Trump Tax Reform or Infrastructure”. Let’s continue with another personal Facebook post and a call to the House Ways and Means Committee (fax if you haven’t done that yet):

  • Facebook:  Post the message on your Facebook page
  • Call or fax (if you haven’t already) the House Ways and Means committee member from your state.
    • Find your member(s) by clicking here:  https://waysandmeans.house.gov/committee-members/
    • Click on the committee member name to find their phone number and place the call.
    • Or fax them by clicking here – House. Remember to confirm the fax via an email you will receive from FaxZero.
    • Script:  “I am (name) from (zip). Tell Trump it’s the Art of the Deal:  No Trump Tax Returns, No Trump Tax Reform or Infrastructure. I expect you to stand firm on this.”
