Let’s not forget about the Dakota Access Pipeline and the risk to water and sacred land that it represents for the Standing Rock Nation.
On April 3, Senators Tom Carper (D-DE), Ranking Member of the Senate Committee on Environment & Public Works, and Maria Cantwell (D-WA), Ranking Member of the Senate Committee on Energy & Natural Resources, sent an oversight letter to the Army Corps of Engineers demanding documentation about its rushed DAPL approval, including all communications and contact with the Trump transition team and administration. One important question asked was:
Has the Corps made a determination that compliance with President Trump’s Executive Memoranda satisfies the federal government’s obligation to meet its trust and treaty obligations to affected tribal governments? If so, please provide documentation.
This inquiry is important; if the project is to move forward, let’s be sure it moves forward in a way that demonstrates some minimum amount of respect for the Native American people affected.
