5 Minute Action for Thursday, 2/23: DeVos and Sessions 1st Priority – Hurt Transgender Students?

The first action of DeVos and Sessions was what? Improve some crucial element of education, like teacher empowerment? Or, address gun violence? Or, address the growth of bullying in schools aimed at women, racial, religious or other minorities?

No. They decided their first action would be to strip transgender students of the protection provided them by the Obama administration to use the bathroom associated with their gender identity.

Shame.

A link to the letter going to educational leaders tomorrow is provided below. Per the Washington Post:  “The administration’s letter was the source of some disagreement between the two issuing departments, with Sessions eager to rescind the Obama administration’s guidance as court proceedings in related cases approached, and DeVos keen to leave it in place…Sessions is widely known to oppose expanding gay and transgender rights, and DeVos’s friends say she personally supports those rights.”

Today’s 5 Minute Action:

Step 1:  Let Sessions know he is wrong, and let DeVos know she should stand up for what she believes is right.

Sample script for Sessions: “With respect to rescinding the order to allow transgender students to use the bathroom of their gender identity, I believe this action reflects your bigotry against the transgender community, regardless of how you attempt to spin it. This should not be up to the states to decide, and you have just enabled a hostile enviroment for some of our most vulnerable youth.”

Sample script for DeVos: “I am calling on behalf of transgender students across the country. With respect to rescinding the order to allow transgender students to use the bathroom of their gender identity, you know this action is wrong and will only hurt vulnerable students. This is a civil rights issue, that should not be up to the states to decide. Please stand tall.”

  • Contact DeVos through the Education department’s Office for Civil Rights and leave your comment:  1-800-421-3481

BREATHE AND STEP FORWARD!
