5 Minute Action for Thursday, 2/16: No on Pruitt for EPA

Amidst the significant turmoil about Trump’s relationship with Russia, which is no doubt the biggest issue right now, Trump’s cabinet picks continue to go through the confirmation process.

We need to keep our eyes on BOTH!

Oklahoma Attorney General Scott Pruitt is about to come up for vote as EPA Administrator, AND, YESTERDAY, SUSAN COLLINS (R-MAINE) ANNOUNCED SHE WILL VOTE ‘NO’ ON PRUITT. This was a principled, non-partisan decision, about which she said: “Specifically, I have significant concerns that Mr. Pruitt has actively opposed and sued the EPA on numerous issues that are of great importance to the state of Maine, including mercury controls for coal-fired power plants and efforts to reduce cross-state air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions,” she said. “His actions leave me with considerable doubts about whether his vision for the EPA is consistent with the agency’s critical mission to protect human health and the environment.”

Last week, the Center for Media and Democracy (CMD) filed suit in an Oklahoma court, demanding EPA nominee Pruitt release records detailing his communications with energy companies ahead of the as-yet-unscheduled Senate vote. The suit alleges Pruitt has failed to respond to multiple records requests seeking access to more than 3,000 emails with Koch Industries and other coal, oil, and gas corporations, as well as the corporate-funded Republican Attorney General’s Association (RAGA).

In a letter to Congress from nearly 500 former EPA staff, they say Mr. Trump’s decision to appoint Mr Pruitt was “an unprecedented assault on environmental protection, not just on EPA as an agency, but on our country’s ability to enjoy clean air, clean water and a logical agenda on climate change.”

5 Minute Actions for TODAY:
