Our heads are spinning. The Senate is at a standoff and not functioning, and each day brings new ‘shock’ events – which appear to be a cornerstone of the Trump/Bannon strategy (see articles at end of post).
Yesterday Larry Summers, former US treasury secretary, was interviewed by the Harvard Business Review. He said:
“Historically, the track record of business isn’t great at standing up to bad governments, whether it’s in Europe in the 1930s, or in Latin America in the 1970s and 1980s. It seems to me that business leaders — of global companies especially — have a huge interest in the United States standing up for an open global system and what I would call Statue-of-Liberty values of openness and freedom, and in the U.S. government making policy based on facts and evidence, not on hunch and gut impression. All three of those values have been importantly challenged in the last days and I’ve been sorry not to see more business leaders speak up and express their concerns.”
We need to amplify the voices of business leaders who are willing to act or speak boldly NOW, early on in this authoritarian regime, and for the long haul. We need to prop up those who ARE speaking out, and pressure those who are not.
We are especially disgusted by respected companies who are advertising on Breitbart, the far-right fake/hate news outlet. Brietbart fuels the distribution of real fake news (omg, we can’t believe we wrote ‘real fake news’) and fuels Bannon, one of its founders.
We again thank Wall-of-Us for some of the content for the 5 Minute Action TODAY:
Step 1: Let AT&T, Amazon, Pinterest and other Brietbart advertisers know you’re disgusted with them for funding a racist fake news outlet!
Click here to go: AdStrike. You will be given a choice of several Breitbart advertisers, and a choice of Facebook or Twitter as the medium.
Use whatever message you like for each. Something that clearly communicates your DISGUST. You can tag your message with @slpg_giants and include #LooseBannon #WallofUs to become more directly part of the online movement to communicate with these companies.
(Wall-of-Us partnered with with Sleeping Giants on a targeted campaign to strip Breitbart of its ad dollars. Over the past ten weeks, Sleeping Giants has weakened Breitbart by stopping their ad dollars from 764+ companies)
Step 2: (optional, if you have time) Again we request you to send an email or Tweet to a CEO on the president’s economic advisory board. See our Tuesday, 1/31 5 Minute Action for contact info. Here is another example of an email you can use – this one sent to Stephen Schwarzman, CEO of Blackstone. Cut/paste and modify in your own words.
Subject: Time to Speak Boldly
Dear Mr. Schwarzman,
I’m writing to ask that you speak boldly and directly at your advisory board meeting on Friday about:
1) the negative effect the immigration/refugee order is having on global businesses and their operations, in addition to the significant human toll, including to our family, friends and neighbors
2) your belief in use of real data and facts in decision making, and your concern about this administration’s attacks on science
3) affirm the good decision to NOT rescind the LGBTQ discrimination ban
We need our business leaders to be bold EARLY during this chaotic time during which our constitution is under seige.
As quoted from a recent article about how to deal with autocrats:
Rule #5: Don’t make compromises. Like Ted Cruz, who made the journey from calling Trump “utterly amoral” and a “pathological liar” to endorsing him in late September to praising his win as an “amazing victory for the American worker,” Republican politicians have fallen into line.
Thank you for reading this and I’m sure you are being very thoughtful about your role – I just hope you are bold with respect to what you know to be right and true, as well.
Thank you from the TrumpResistance.TODAY team
(and see you again tomorrow!)
