The events of the past week have been extraordinarily difficult for people on both sides of the aisle. Whether you voted for Clinton or Trump, we are all human beings, and the stories emerging about the individuals and families already affected by the immigration and refugee executive orders are breaking all of our hearts. This is not our America.
This should be a moment of UNITY for us. No finger pointing. Let’s find some common ground. This is a crucial step toward ensuring our democracy remains strong and hopeful.
Venezuela was challenged by being a similarly polarized nation in the late ’90’s. Here is an excerpt from an article in Sunday’s Washington Post by a man who lived through this crisis, A:
“Don’t waste your time trying to prove that this grand idea is better than that one. Ditch all the big words. The problem, remember, is not the message but the messenger. It’s not that Trump supporters are too stupid to see right from wrong, it’s that you’re more valuable to them as an enemy than as a compatriot. Your challenge is to prove that you belong in the same tribe as them — that you are American in exactly the same way they are.”
The 5 Minute Action TODAY is:
Step 1: Affirm a Trump voter (or another Trump voter if you are one) who has been visible in their criticism of his immigration order. Simply call or write them TODAY and say:
“THANK YOU for speaking out against Trump’s immigration order. The last few days have been so painful for so many on both sides of the aisle. Perhaps this is showing us that we CAN unify over a number of core American values.”
If you don’t know anyone personally, then contact one of these Republican electeds who have spoken up. Thanks to Vox.com for keeping track of this important list. We’re providing you with email contact form links. If you don’t have a zip code or address to provide for that state, then we suggest you focus on Sen. Jeff Flake (R-AZ), as he will also vote on Sessions on Tuesday. Call his office, email or send a comment on his Facebook page.
Sen. Jeff Flake (R-AZ): Encourage him to also vote NO on Sessions! https://www.flake.senate.gov/public/index.cfm/contact-jeff
