5 Minute Action for Monday, 4/17: Protect Lives, U.S. Credibility: Pass the ‘Keeping Our Promise to Our Afghan Allies Act’

Thanks to RogansList for TODAY’s 5 Minute Action.

Right now it is even more important for our members of Congress to support the Keeping Our Promise to Our Afghan Allies Act, which would add 2,500 visas to the Afghan Special Immigrant Visa (SIV) program.

Per an excerpt from The Hill, “These interpreters put their lives on the line for American values, often even picking up a weapon to defend the U.S. forces they were with when the shooting started. That kind of risk, courage, and sacrifice doesn’t escape notice—especially among those who oppose it. Even today, interpreters and others who ‘collaborated’ with American forces have their pictures and personal information circulated among extremist groups, with bounties on their heads and the heads of their families.”

TODAY’s 5 Minute Action:

Step 1:  Call the House Judiciary Committee and ask them to move this bill along and call our own representatives, too. Use this great app to get phone numbers and make the call:

  • Open the link below and follow the directions. Note, when you click on the phone number you can either use your computer to make the call, or use your phone and then record the result to get the next number to call.  Call 5 times if you have time!

5 Minute Action for Sunday, 4/16: Watch A Future Leader in Action

…and be inspired.

Sunday actions on TrumpResistance.TODAY are focused on religious freedom and/or spiritual enrichment.

President Donald Trump privately signed a bill on Thursday that allows states to withhold federal money from organizations that provide abortion services, including Planned Parenthood, a group frequently targeted by Republicans. The bulk of federal money Planned Parenthood receives, though, goes toward preventive health care, birth control, pregnancy tests and other women’s health services. Federal law prohibits taxpayer dollars from funding abortions and Planned Parenthood says 3% of the services it provides are abortions. The signing comes weeks after Vice President Mike Pence, an extreme social conservative who regularly touts his anti-abortion stances, cast the tie-breaking vote in the Senate after two Republicans opposed the measure.

5 Minute Action for Saturday, 4/15: Join Tax Protests

Turns out, people still care about President Trump’s tax returns.

On Saturday, protesters across the U.S. plan to demand that Trump make his most recent tax returns public. It’s something every president and presidential nominee has done for the past 40 years.

Trump has said that Americans “don’t care at all” about his tax returns, but polls show 74% of Americans say he should release them. Many lawmakers, including some Republicans, have also called on him to make them public. A petition demanding that Trump release his returns has garnered more than 1 million signatures. And, tax protests are planned across the US tomorrow.

TODAY’s 5 Minute Action:

Step 1: Sign the petition that has now received over 1 million signatures, to demand Trump release his tax returns:  click here – petition

Step 2: March in a tax rally in your city (OK, over 5 minutes); Google to find it.

Step 3: If you can’t march, then post your support on facebook:  click here – https://www.facebook.com/trumptaxesmarch/

5 Minute Action for Friday, 4/14: Act Now – 30 Day Comment Period for Trump EPA Reform is Open

In a short-sighted action led by climate denier EPA Secretary Scott Pruitt, on February 24, 2017, President Trump signed Executive Order 13777, “Enforcing the Regulatory Reform Agenda.” This established a federal policy “to alleviate unnecessary regulatory burdens” on the American people. Part of the EO directs federal agencies to establish a Regulatory Reform Task Force (Task Force). One of the duties of the Task Force is to evaluate existing regulations and “make recommendations to the agency head regarding their repeal, replacement, or modification.” The EO further asks that each Task Force “attempt to identify regulations that, among a few other criteria:

(i) Eliminate jobs, or inhibit job creation;

(ii) are outdated, unnecessary, or ineffective;

(iii) impose costs that exceed benefits

No where does it say anything about protecting the long term health of the planet, protecting our water, air, earth for future generations, or creating jobs in new industries that are better for the environment in the long term.

It’s time to voice your opinions about this EO!

TODAY’s 5 Minute Action:

Step 1:  Provide your thoughts about the EPA unwinding important regulatory measures that protect the long term health of our planet and future generations.

  • Click here to go to the EPA comment website – https://www.epa.gov/laws-regulations/regulatory-reform#Public
  • Click on the upper right “Comment Now” tab to open the comment form
  • If you have specific facts supporting your opposition to the repeal of these regulations, please include them in your comments.  If not, we suggest a simple message as follows:  “Your criteria do not have a timeframe associated with them, and I believe you are being extremely short sighted. We can take an action today that creates 1 job and saves $50, but damages a city of 100,000 and costs millions of dollars ten or twenty years from now. That is precisely what you are advocating and for that, I must strongly oppose this EO.”

5 Minute Action for Thursday, 4/13: Stop Deportation of This Mother of Four

Maribel Trujillo-Diaz, a mother of four who fled Mexico and had legal papers to remain here while her asylum case is pending, was detained by ICE and is scheduled for deportation – separating her from her husband and 4 young children, including one disabled child.

Trujillo, who came to the United States in 2002, said she originally fled Mexico because drug cartels targeted her family. “She said she came to live a better life — something you can’t really do in Mexico,” her 14-year-old son, Oswaldo, said. “She said the risk was worth taking because not only she gets a better life and her husband, but her kids will get a better life and our kids will get a better life.”

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials first came into contact with her in 2007, when she was among dozens arrested during a federal raid of a Fairfield Koch Foods plant. Trujillo remained in the United States for the next 10 years and worked for a church, according to her pastor, the Rev. Mike Pucke. When immigration officials again moved to deport her in 2016, religious leaders’ pleas on her behalf earned Trujillo a work permit meant to last until this July.

That permit was still valid when ICE arrested her again in April. Pucke and other local leaders, including U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown and University of Cincinnati Chaplain Amina Darwish, again implored ICE to reconsider her case and grant her a stay of removal.

But U.S. Circuit Judges Ronald Gilman, Ralph Guy and David McKeague dismissed her motion Tuesday.

TODAY’s 5 Minute Action:

Step 1:  Let’s join in with many others who are calling Assistant ICE Director Mark Hamilton 313-568-6037 or ICE Field Director Adducci at 313-568-6036.

  • Script:  “Hi, my name is [name], and I’m calling in support of Maribel Trujillo-Diaz. She has a pending asylum case, has no criminal record in the U.S., has a US work permit, and is caring for her four children, one of whom suffers from seizures. Deporting her will do nothing to make our country safer, but it will cause irreparable damage to her and her family. Please suspend her deportation, and stop tearing families apart.”

5 Minute Action for Wednesday, 4/12: Sean Spicer Is At Best Ignorant – Still Need To Focus On The Person Who Hired Him…

Donald Trump.

We think calls for Spicer’s resignation are justified after his incredulous remarks when comparing Assad to Hitler (he asserted Hitler did not use chemical weapons).  However, these also represent another mis-direct from an even bigger issue – the incompetence of the person who hired him and thinks he is qualified for this job, Donald Trump.

Trump has created chaos in the White House and caused a confusing US global policy that is bringing us to the brink of a major event with North Korea.

His relationship and his team’s relationship with Russia remain a significant concern. And so, we are doubling down today on the 5 Minute Action from yesterday, 4/11.  It may not be exciting and different, but it’s fundamental to the key issue right now.

TODAY’s 5 Minute Action:

Step 1:  Take a few minutes and review the indivisible guide and decide what action you will take TODAY or in the days ahead – click here:  https://www.indivisibleguide.com/resource/demand-independent-russia-investigation/

  • Take another action on top of the one you took yesterday!
  • If you don’t have time to review the entire indivisible guide, then we suggest contacting your Senators via fax (again!)

  • Script (please personalize):  ‘For the sake of our national security, I want a thorough and impartial investigation into Russian interference in our elections. We cannot let a foreign power get away with manipulating our democratic process. Our enemies are emboldened when America’s response to foreign interference is incompetent and ineffective. Right now, we are all less safe.  I know you, too, want a secure America.  Will you stand up for our security and commit to supporting an independent investigation into Russian interference by co-sponsoring Senator Cardin’s bill, S. 27?’

5 Minute Action for Tuesday, 4/11: Fox News Report: ‘Russia knew of Syrian chemical attack in advance, US Offical Says’

Yes, Fox News.

There have been many questions raised about Russia’s involvement in the chemical attack in Syria last week, and specifically Putin’s involvement.

National Security Adviser H.R. McMaster went so far as to imply Russian likely knew Assad was going to unleash deadly chemical weapons on his people – but did nothing.

“How could it be, if you have advisers at that airfield, that you didn’t know that the Syrian air force was preparing and executing a mass murder attack with chemical weapons?” McMaster said. “I think we ought to ask them that question.”

In addition, a US official says a Russian-operated drone flew over a hospital in Syria as victims of the attack were rushing to get treatment. Hours after the drone left, a Russian-made fighter jet bombed the hospital in what American officials believe was an attempt to cover up the usage of chemical weapons.

Now there are also questions about why we may have given a heads up to Russia, and therefore Syria, about the US attack, left their runways largely in tact, and NOT hit the chemical weapons in a fashion that would destroy them.

5 Minute Action for Monday, 4/10: Support Dakota Access Pipeline Inquiry

Let’s not forget about the Dakota Access Pipeline and the risk to water and sacred land that it represents for the Standing Rock Nation.

On April 3, Senators Tom Carper (D-DE), Ranking Member of the Senate Committee on Environment & Public Works, and Maria Cantwell (D-WA), Ranking Member of the Senate Committee on Energy & Natural Resources, sent an oversight letter to the Army Corps of Engineers demanding documentation about its rushed DAPL approval, including all communications and contact with the Trump transition team and administration. One important question asked was:

Has the Corps made a determination that compliance with President Trump’s Executive Memoranda satisfies the federal government’s obligation to meet its trust and treaty obligations to affected tribal governments? If so, please provide documentation.

This inquiry is important; if the project is to move forward, let’s be sure it moves forward in a way that demonstrates some minimum amount of respect for the Native American people affected.

TODAY’s 5 Minute Action:

Step 1:  Using this form, join them in asking the Army Corps of Engineers for this information:  http://lakotalaw.org/ACE-oversight

5 Minute Action for Sunday, 4/9: Send Your Healing Energy Around The World

Sunday actions on TrumpResistance.TODAY are focused on religious freedom and/or spiritual enrichment.

This is a practice for sending healing energy around the world – we all need it so much right now. This may feel odd to some of you, but what do you have to lose – try it!

We’ll start at the end so you know where this is going:  visualize the earth floating in space between your hands, concentrate on a particular nation or continent, send healing light through your hands…and then move on to the next area, gradually moving around an imaginary globe.

TODAY’s 5 Minute Action:

Step 1: Find a quiet space and follow these instructions:

  1. Sit erect. Gently tense and relax your whole body. Calm yourself. Reach around your neck and touch the medulla once (portion of your brain stem, at the top of your spinal cord), in order to make it easier for you to concentrate on it. Then visualize Cosmic Energy surrounding and entering the body through the medulla and at the point between the eyebrows, and pouring into the spine.
  2. Feel the energy flowing down the whole length of your two arms into your hands. Continue tensing and relaxing and feeling the life force flow from the medulla and the point between the eyebrows through the spine to your hands.
  3. Stop tensing and relaxing, and firmly rub the entire bare left arm with the right palm (up and down several times). Do the same to the right arm with the left palm.
  4. Relax. Continue visualizing and willing Cosmic Energy to descend from the medulla through the arms into your hands. Now, with closed eyes, rapidly but gently rub your palms together about twenty times.
  5. Separate the hands, and lift the arms upward. You will feel the life current flowing from the medulla into the spine, especially through both arms and hands, with a prickling, tingling sensation.
  6. Your energy-magnetized hands are healing. Visualize the earth floating in space between your hands, concentrate on a particular nation or continent, send healing light through your hands…and then move on to the next area, gradually moving around an imaginary globe.

BREATHE AND STEP FORWARD!

5 Minute Action for Saturday, 4/9: Critical For Our Democracy – Thank You To Collins and Coons For Their Leadership

It was a sad day when McConnell (see our 4/5 post) played the ‘nuclear option’ for the Gorsuch vote. It changed the way our Senate works, making it much more partisan.

In response, two Senators – Susan Collins (R-Maine) and Chris Coons (D-Delaware) – wrote a letter, which was subsequently signed by 61 Senators, urging them to maintain the 60-vote threshold for votes involving legislation. This is needed to ensure bipartisanship remains a component of passing bills through the chamber.

They were able to get the signatures of 28 Republicans, 32 Democrats and one independent –  evidence that a broad mix of senators back the fundamental concept that the Senate govern by bipartisan rules, despite the action by McConnell and the GOP today.

TODAY’s 5 Minute Action:

Step 1:  Amidst the divisive partisanship in Washington right now, please reach out and thank Susan Collins and Chris Coons for their leadership.

Step 2: If you have time, send a thank you to your state Senator, if they are listed below.

BREATHE AND STEP FORWARD!
